Neda and Bhutto given bullets for their bravery.
As her story becomes history, the homicide of Neda, the death of a woman gives life to a people. With the backlash at her bloodletting building every minute, is it enough to encourage the protesters to prevail? Will the vigil, held in her honor, help to change the course in Iran?
Listening to the reports today, I thought back to the violent assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The comparison in my mind is a straightforward one. Two strong women, daring to voice their opinion, given bullets for their bravery.
One other media report blended with today’s coverage from Iran. Calling it a “debasement” to woman, CNN is reporting that French President Nicolas Sarkozy says of burqas, “It will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic.”
Though good intentioned, I suspect, Sarkozy fails to see that the only voter which matters in the pro/con burqa debate is the woman herself. Ordering a female to don or doff a burqa is the beginning of debasement. Liberty is the ultimate meaning of life.
It would seem to me that women of the fundamentalist Islamic world, perhaps women everywhere, are thinking “enough is enough.”
